Oil-Cooled Screw Compressors: Cooling, Oil and Service

What the oil actually does

Oil injected into the compression chamber seals the rotor gaps, absorbs the heat of compression, lubricates the bearings and carries contaminants to the separator. Because it does all four jobs, its condition sets the machine's condition: degraded oil shows up as higher discharge temperature, higher power draw and eventually oil carryover into the air line.

The family

The oil-cooled range in our catalogue covers 7.5 kW to 75 kW class machines, typically at 12 bar and in the sizes a general workshop needs. These are the machines that most plants install first, and they carry most of the maintenance burden in a compressed air system.

Item What to watch
Oil temperature Rising trend means cooler fouling, low oil level or the wrong oil grade
Oil pressure Falling pressure points to a blocked filter or a worn pump
Separator differential Rising differential costs energy; a burst element sends oil downstream
Cooler Dust on the air side is the most common single cause of overheating
Oil analysis The cheapest early warning available; take samples on a schedule

Change intervals and condition

Hours-based oil changes are a starting point, not an answer. Ambient temperature, dust load and duty cycle all change how fast the oil degrades. A machine in a clean, cool room running steady shifts can go longer than the book figure; a machine in a foundry cannot. Sampling and trending is what separates a maintenance plan from a habit.

Installation that protects the oil

  • Cool incoming air - a hot room raises oil temperature before the machine has done any work.
  • Clean the cooler - accessible cooler faces are worth designing for.
  • Keep the dryer downstream - a dryer that is condensing heavily means the aftercooler is not doing its job.
  • Drain the receiver - water carried into the oil circuit accelerates degradation.
