Air Dryer Maintenance: What Wears Out and What to Watch

Two dryer types, two failure patterns

A refrigerated dryer removes moisture by cooling the air and draining the condensate. Its performance depends on the refrigeration circuit, the heat exchanger and the drain. An adsorption dryer passes air through desiccant that is regenerated on a cycle; its performance depends on the desiccant, the switching valves and the purge air allowance.

Refrigerated dryers

Component What happens over time
Condenser coil Dust and lint reduce heat rejection, raising dew point - the most common cause of gradual loss of dryness
Drain trap Sticks open (wasting air) or closed (flooding the dryer)
Refrigerant charge Slow leaks reduce cooling capacity; the dryer runs but delivers wetter air
Heat exchanger Fouling reduces effectiveness, particularly on water-cooled units

Adsorption dryers

  • Desiccant - degrades through cycling, oil carryover and thermal ageing; it loses capacity gradually and then sharply.
  • Switching valves - the cycle depends on them seating correctly; a passing valve sends wet air through.
  • Purge air - regeneration consumes a share of the dried air; if the purge setting is wrong, the dryer either under-regenerates or wastes air.
  • Inlet filtration - oil reaching the desiccant poisons it permanently, which makes the upstream filter a dryer component in practice.

What to watch instead of waiting for failure

Dew point is the direct measure and the one most plants do not take. A portable dew point meter read at the dryer outlet, recorded over months, shows degradation before it reaches the process. On refrigerated units, condenser cleaning and drain testing cover most of the risk; on adsorption units, dew point monitoring plus a desiccant change schedule is the minimum.

The connection to the rest of the system

A dryer cannot fix a system that delivers wet air to it. If the aftercooler is not working, or the receiver drain has failed, the dryer is being asked to handle liquid water rather than vapour, and it will underperform regardless of maintenance. Check the whole chain, not just the box with the dew point problem.
